Results of the 2009 Kepner-Tregoe International Process Achievement Awards.
Feb-02-2010
We at KT are delighted to announce the results of the 2009 Kepner-Tregoe International Process Achievement Awards. Once again we had a wide number of entries from client organizations around the world and in many different industries. Judging was as always a challenge, but I am pleased to announce the following winners:
Grand Winner - Operational Excellence
BJC Healthcare
BJC's systematic tactical and strategic implementation of KT's processes, led by senior management in an implementation throughout the organization, had a net positive impact of more than $16m saved.
Winner, Single Use of Process
Kaiser Permanente
Kaiser Permanente's project was designed to ensure the comprehensive capturing of all services provided at an owned hospital. KT Business Process Mapping and KT Project Management were combined to create a system which ensures that charges and supporting medical documentation are captured at the right point in the overall process, eliminating missed charges and additional work down stream in the process. The result: an estimated $85M increase in additional charges captured over the prior year - an increase solely attributed to enhanced business processes.
The work done in these companies is an example of the power of rational process, and the value that those who use it bring to their organizations. From all of us at KT to all who worked on the winning projects, many congratulations on your achievements - and congratulations too to all our clients who have improved the operation of their businesses through the application of rational process tools.

Date: November 17-19, 2009 in Daytona Beach, Florida Presentation Summary: Why a fresh look at "how work gets done around your organization" might just be the most critical - and economical - way to achieve and sustain a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Well-respected leaders in a variety of organizations may agree to disagree on strategic assumptions upon which they will make decisions in their industry's current environment - or the method by which their organizations will "win" in the current marketplace. However, all leaders agree that their organizations must have a crystal clear strategy - and equally critical - the business processes in place to "deliver the goods" against that strategy. Service Business at a Crossroad?
Details: If Service and Support in the US is a $125 billion industry, what piece of the pie is yours and what is your potential for growth? The environment for this high growth industry is very turbulent. Flat or shrinking revenue, increasing complexity and multi-vendor issues drive up costs and expend resources. If you want to survive and grow, you need a sound strategy. A service strategy guides choices that determine the nature and direction of your service organization. It is not a single decision. A strategy is a cluster of decisions that have different variables but meld into a coherent whole. No decisions are more far reaching, or have a greater impact on your organization than those made in formulating a strategy.

Details: Recognizing the Performance System Every employee, team, or workgroup operates within a performance system. Its drivers may or may not be visible; the system may be structured into work processes and systems, or may be based on informal, tacitly accepted expectations. Nonetheless, a performance system is in place. The ROE Performance System model provides the framework for understanding performance and a set of skills that helps leadership and managers deliberately analyze, improve, and align drivers that influence performance. This model takes the mystery out of understanding why your people are not doing what you expect them to do and helps leadership and managers understand how to "engineer" the human performance system to align performance for success.

One Pedal Wonders - how a commitment to cost management supports long-term excellence
Feb-20-2009
The current practices of the financial services sector make it seem like those in control are driving cars with only one pedal. When the times were good, every foot was on the accelerator. Debt piled on debt and loans ran like water. The pace of excess was running so fast few took the time to stop, measure and assess it's long-term impact. Now, it seems that every leader in this market has discovered the brake pedal and is not taking their foot off it as though their life depended on it. Of the greatest concern is that mindset of these "one-pedal wonders" has pervaded the entire marketplace. It seems that cost management must be embraced to ensure long-term value is created.
Innovation with KT's Alan Brache

One is the matter of creating an environment in organizations that helps unleash these inventive qualities. Brache says that an organization can explore innovative processes, not just products or inventions. Find out more about innovation, what can get in the way of it, and discover how free thinking might apply to your business in this interesting interview.
Big Decisions Demand Rigor II or why TARP is truly an appropriate name
Dec-18-2008
It would seem we are seeing the value of objectives, and their harm when they are absent or unclear, being played out on the public stage once again. This time the arena is the series of financial bailouts enacted (in the case of the $700B Financial Service industry plan) or planned (in the case of the Automotive industry). The challenge of "rescuing" the distressed US economy, and by turn the global economy, seems to be compounded by an absence of visible, prioritized, and above all, specific objectives against which solutions can be designed and assessed.
No Credit - No Worries...or at least a path to address them
Dec-09-2008
Right about now we all know more about collateralized debt obligations, structured investment vehicles, mortgage-based securities and credit default swaps than anyone without a Nobel Prize for Economics has any right to know. While most of us are not moving in circles where the structures of high finance have had much meaning to us, we have all recently discovered just how much these financial oddities affect our own success. The first order of business is to figure out what to do now that the ready access to credit has evaporated. Until those funds begin flowing we will all need to relearn lessons of old: Do more with less and make the most of what you have.

Enduring Needs - Critical Thinking Skills sought by Hiring Managers
Oct-03-2008
A survey by CareerBuilder.com reveals the skills necessary to survive economic down turns. People in business have to be able to rapidly prioritize problems, identify their root cause, make decisions about what to do to correct it, and manage the associated systems risk and potential. Critical thinking skills are not only desired, they are a fundamental skill necessary for a business's long-term strategic and operational success and they are what hiring managers look for most.

Another Gap to Bridge - tackling the distance between thought and action in workforce generational change
Aug-07-2008
What systems should businesses be putting in place to tie the past and present of their organization to the future to accommodate the retirement of Baby Boomers and the generation-shift taking their place? There are a couple of critical elements. Make the knowledge easy to transfer. And, provide opportunities for it to be transferred. A common language for issue resolution and action is recommended.

Beyond Problems - why the fire-fighter is not the most appropriate model for business leadership success
Jul-16-2008
In a demand-driven world, the fire-fighter is the pinnacle of virtue. They are asked to address critical issues through the extraordinary application of their efforts. The only problem with this mind set is that the tyranny of the urgent will continue to outweigh the benefits of applying resources to longer term issues of building strategic capability and capacity. What should an organization do?
Mind the Gap - In Troubled Times filling the space between Choking and Panicking
Jun-29-2008
The news today is filled with tales of woe. Global fuel prices are increasing at a phenomenal rate. Access to basic necessities such as water, food and shelter is being impacted by a more chaotic and changing climate. The global economies are suffering from the after effects of an economic downturn, the result of the United States subprime mortgage debacle and its investment banks Structured Investment Vehicle follies. All in all, the world seems very much in turmoil. In troubled times, clarity of thought helps you aim for the gap between choking and panic to use data in a way that helps you do what you need to survive and thrive.

KT Shutdown Services Meet Growing Demand
Jun-27-2008
Among the Kepner-Tregoe services experiencing growing demand is our support for shutdowns, turnarounds and outages. KT's focused planning and implementation programs have a huge impact on the success of the planned activities that are accomplished during a limited timeframe, and they reduce the risk of substantial cost and time overruns. This summer Rio Tinto made a presentation about their shutdown work with KT at the Shutdowns, Turnarounds, and Outages Conference in Indianapolis where KT also hosted an Expo booth. KT Asia-Pacific is sponsoring a breakfast meeting on this topic in Sydney in July; and a live, global webcast on Shutdown Excellence will be scheduled later this summer. Big Decisions Demand Process Rigor - on Vice Presidential selection and Decision Analysis
Jun-06-2008
Only 18 months and the primary election cycle in the United States has (finally) ground to a halt. The victors, or almost victors, are steeling themselves for the general election process and one of their first critical decisions as their party’s representative for election to the highest office in the land – the selection of a running mate. For those of you who know KT, these are the beginning of a more robust set of objectives in what should be a comprehensive Decision Analysis.
KT Chief Innovation Officer, Drew Marshall, at Day 3 (May 21st) of the PMI EMEA Congress in Malta
May-21-2008
KT's Chief Innovation Officer, Drew Marshall, is attending and presenting at the Project Management Insitute's EMEA (Europe, Middle East & Africa) Congress this week in St Julians, Malta. May 18-21.
The final day at the PMI EMEA Congress ended well. Today, the range of subjects covered was almost as broad as the project management profession is applicable. To start, though, I led the day off with a presentation titled, "Filling the Baby Boomer Vacuum." The interesting fact of the presentation was that many in the audience had little understanding of the extent of this generational transformation taking place in around them in the organization in which they work.

Shutdown Excellence Programs Control Cost & Risk
Feb-28-2008
Without careful planning and risk management, delays can cause the cost of lost production to far exceed the planned maintenance costs of a shutdown. A small investment in KT is minimal compared to the total costs of your shutdown or the risks of a poorly executed shut with costly delays and incomplete projects.
New Tools from the Tregoe Education Forum
Feb-07-2008
Since 1993, when Ben Tregoe founded the Tregoe Education Forum (www.tregoe.org), the Forum has worked to enhance collaborative problem-solving skills in schools and students. Central to its mission is its belief in the value of equipping young people with rational process in order to better meet life's challenges. To that end, the Forum has announced the launch of www.yourtake.org, a dynamic new problem-solving site for teenagers and educators. School subscribers to the site will have access to a variety of resources including SCAN, an innovative online tool for the classroom that draws on Situation Appraisal to help teens collaboratively examine complex issues and develop their own take on them.
As a member of the KT community, you are invited to donate a free subscription to your local school or any school in the US or Canada. A subscription is normally $299/year. It allows schools full access to the site and the opportunity to use its online resources with as many students as they like.
